Kalyves is a seaside resort located 19km west of Chania, on the south coast of Souda Bay. This picturesque village is built on a fertile green valley, where several rivers flow. The village’s name (i.e. “Huts” in Greece) seems to come after the primitive huts that were built by farmers in their fields, to spend the summer nights. Near the village, on its east side, flow the rivers of Xidas and Mesopotamos. Moreover, the several springs inside the sea, combined with the rivers, decrease the sea temperature. East and west of the river Xidas, two sandy beaches with shallow water are formed, open to north winds. Xidas and Maistrali beaches, as they are called respectively, are very well organised and all common tourist facilities and services are provided there.
Georgioupolis is a seaside resort located 38km east of Chania and 21km west of Rethymnon. It is a small coastal town, situated in a lush valley filled with rivers and springs. The town lies on the western edge of a vast long beach with 10km length. Georgioupolis beach stretches 2km to the east, starting from the river Almiros and ending in Kavros beach, which is a natural extension of the first beach. Georgioupolis beach is sandy with dunes in places and shallow waters.
Falasarna bay hosts some of the most famous beaches in Greece, which has been awarded as the best beach of Crete and voted as one of the 10 best beaches in Europe several times in the past. Falasarna spans a large area and consists actually of five consecutive beaches, with the two most central being the most favorite.
Crete’s most spectacular beaches are often the hardest to reach, and Balos is certainly one of them. Excursion boats depart from Kissamos (40 kilometers west of Chania), but it’s more fun to hire a vehicle, preferably a 4WD jeep, and visit independently
